Season 2012/2013 is Stelmet Zielona Gora’s third season in top polish league and first opportunity to show up in European competition. Last year we reached the Polish League semifinals and the Polish Cup final.

Zielona Gora, which can be translated as “Green Mountain”, is an unique city in western Poland, just 60 kilometers from the German border. It has almost 120,000 inhabitants within the city limits and 294,000 inhabitants within the metropolitan area, including three neighbouring counties. Lot of them are huge fans of local basketball team.

The idea of creating basketball club takes us to 1946, when first team played in local competitions based around Poznan. By the early 1960s, Zielona Gora was among the best teams in its region and had begun developing young talent too. In 1967, under historical name ‘Zastal’, the club moved up to the national level of competition. Coach Tadeusz Aleksandrowicz made history by leading Zastal to the top league in Poland for the first time in 1984. The team’s run in the top league lasted until 1996 and then after two seasons down, Zastal returned to the top until 2001. However this time, relegation hit hard and Zastal fell to the regional northern league.

When the club’s future seemed darkest, Rafal Czarkowski led a group of basketball enthusiasts, who took control of the club. Zastal rebounded into the second division, but toiled there for seven years, often coming close to achieving promotion, but always falling short. Until 2010, when led by Coach Tomasz Herkt, Zastal placed second in the league and completed its return to the top level. Walter Hodge arrived prior to the start of the season and soon developed not only into Zastal’s leader, but also MVP of whole league. After some exciting early results, the fans in Zielona Gora started to pack the arena as Zastal cemented its status as a team with a promising future. Ultimately, Zastal finished short of the playoffs that season, but by last year the team reached the Polish Cup final, finished the regular season in fourth place, knocked off Energa Czarni Slupsk in the playoff quarterfinals and put up a fight against perennial champion Asseco Prokom Gdynia in the semis before bowing out.

Before this season Zastal transformed, changed the logo and the name. From then on club’s name is Stelmet Zielona Gora. But it still associates basketball enthusiasts ready to do whatever it takes to help their beloved team.

From However those results changed the face of basketball in Zielona Gora and Stelmet now takes another step forward in the Eurocup. Watch out, Europe! We’re going to fight for every point in this season of Eurocup competition.
